The District

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas is a pivotal entity in the federal judiciary, serving a diverse and expansive area that includes key urban centers like Houston, as well as border regions adjacent to Mexico. This district is characterized by its involvement in significant legal matters related to its booming oil and cattle industries, alongside its unique geographic and demographic profile.

The main courthouse, situated in the Bob Casey Federal Building in Houston, is complemented by additional divisions in Corpus Christi, Galveston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria

Federal Judges’ Roles and Responsibilities

Currently, the Southern District of Texas is staffed by 19 U.S. District Judges, 11 of whom are senior judges, and 12 Magistrate Judges.

The judges in this district oversee a wide array of cases. Due to the district’s proximity to the Mexico border, there is a high volume of immigration and drug trafficking cases. Additionally, the district deals with legal issues specific to the oil and cattle industries, including environmental violations and commercial disputes, as well as maritime law cases and complex civil rights issues.

Judges manage trials, pre-trial proceedings, motion rulings, and legal opinions, maintaining a commitment to justice and legal precision.
