Judges’ Responsibilities

The Southern District of California is staffed by 23 U.S. District Judges and 13 Magistrate Judges. They are responsible for conducting sentencing, bail hearings, trials, managing pre-trial proceedings, ruling on motions, and issuing legal opinions, all dedicated to upholding justice and legal integrity.

Courthouse Locations

The main courthouse is the Edward J. Schwartz and James M. Carter and Judith N. Keep U.S. Courthouse in San Diego. Another important location is the courthouse in El Centro. These courthouses operate from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while the clerk’s offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday​​.

Federal Public Defender’s Office

The Federal Public Defender’s Office provides essential legal representation to indigent defendants in federal criminal cases across the district. Their services cover all stages of the legal process, including trials, plea negotiations, and sentencing. Posting Bail Bonds

In the Southern District of California, bond fulfillment documents must be submitted in person at the Criminal Intake window. Bail payments are accepted via cashier’s checks or money orders; cash over $5,000 and personal checks are not accepted.
